Spirits and Shadows

There are shadows in this place.

Benevolent in earth but

Malignant when wronged.

Treat them with respect

Greet them with peace.

The spirits tend their own.

The Zena Cemetery is known as one of the most haunted cemeteries in Oregon. Because of this, the place is locked up at night to keep people from destroying it. The property is well cared for and is also one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Oregon.

I had yet to visit this one in spite of it being within 25 miles from me. I have been working on a research project for the Independence HeritageMuseum trying to learn about the early Dutch immigrants in Polk County. There isn't much information available and I thought I would look at nearby cemeteries for Dutch names. I love cemeteries and this gave me a good excuse.

My daughter-in-law Rosa and I went there yesterday. We walked around and quietly enjoyed the magnificent place. And yes... we did find spirits, just not like you might think.

I was taking a photograph of a headstone for a “Baby Brown” when I noticed I was standing in a shadow that looked very much like a person wearing a hat and cape. I even jumped a little... I thought someone was standing next to me. I stepped back and saw it was the shadow of a nearby monument stone. There were other similar stones but none of their shadows looked like this.

The names on the monument were of women and the shadow seemed to be watching over the child's grave.

I found that comforting

and thanked them as I left.

There were many spirits...

The only ghosts were us.
