The Angel of Compassion

Painting: Angel of Compassion 01

The Angel of Compassion is a painting that leaves the viewers to decide the meaning for themselves. There are so many issues to touch on... from global terrorism, ecology, politics, and hunger... to more personal and intimate problems of ageing, abuse, depression, poverty, etc... and everything in-between. It was difficult to narrow it down so... I left it open. This painting touches on some very personal issues to me but at the same time can apply to anyone, any time, anywhere.

I found it difficult to write my thoughts and feelings about this painting. But that is OK with me because it was never really my intent. My plan from the beginning was to create a painting about 'Compassion' and let it stand as my statement. My art is my voice. It is how I speak to the world about how I feel and what I think.

Even if I did explain, art is always interpreted differently and personally by the viewer. So... I am going to leave it to you to decide what it means to you and what you take away from this.

Please feel free to leave a comment and share with me what it means to you!

Painting: Angel of Compassion 02

On January 17th, I published a blog post We are Here! 1000 Voices Speak for Compassion. Please read, as it explains why I am doing this. It is about a project in which I am participating called 1000 Voices Speak for Compassion. Over 1200 people have agreed to write, post, and share about compassion on their blog sites on this day February 20th, 2015. I signed on early (#120 on the list) and as far as I can tell I might be the only visual artist in the bunch... most of the others are writers. That does make me quite unique doesn't it?! I am excited and I feel very honoured to be a part of this important movement that has taken off around the globe.

My dear cousin Donna Coupe graciously allowed me to use an image of her from a photograph taken by her son Michael Baer. The angel is from a cemetery sculpture in Italy.

  1. This is a beautiful painting. Letting each person interpret it as it applies to their world is wonderful. To me, I see the angel consoling the eyes that look upon a world where compassion is lacking. The angel is standing by opening eyes toward the little compassion sparks that show the potential for change.

  3. Wow. This is beautiful. To me, the angel is there to catch her tears. It actually makes me want to cry. Truly touching and beautiful. Thank you for being a unique voice for this movement :)
